Green tea is a traditional ingredient in many parts of the Far East, yet lately it has been becoming more and more common in other parts of the world, and is now available in a whole selection of different varieties, in virtually all stores which stock food and drink. But what is it about green tea that we find so appealing? Well, firstly it tastes pretty awesome, which is of course a big plus in the eyes of tea lovers. Secondly, it has been found to possess a wide range of health, fitness, and well-being benefits, making it incredibly healthy and beneficial. Thirdly however, is the fact that it contains caffeine, which many people apparently can’t seem to get enough of, particularly early in the morning when they wake up. What is caffeine and why do tea plants contain it?

Caffeine is a natural compound found within the leaves and seeds of tea and coffee plants, and it is actually designed to act as a form of self defence for them, due to the fact that it works as a natural pesticide, protecting the plants from being eaten by bugs and insects. When humans consume it however, it works as a stimulant, making them feel more awake and alert, providing temporary increases in energy levels.

In terms of how much caffeine is found in green tea, although it can vary depending on the age and variety of the tea, generally speaking in an average sized cup, there is around 25mg of caffeine.

Benefits of caffeine

There are a number of benefits associated with caffeine, as well as a few drawbacks as well. Firstly, here’s a look at the benefits of caffeine.

Enhanced mental function – The caffeine content in green tea has been found to be particularly useful in regards to the brain, helping to enhance and increase mental health and function. Trouble sleeping – Caffeine makes you feel awake and alert, so the more you have in your system, the harder you will find it to sleep. Avoid drinking caffeine late at night, and make sure you don’t drink too much of it each day.
