They have also been found to play a key role in heart disease and numerous other serious health conditions. If you think of a nice fresh, vacuum packed steak stored in your fridge at home – as the steak is stored in a vacuum packed package, it stays a deep red colour and nice and fresh. Once you break the seal and expose the steak to oxygen however, it quickly begins to fade, turn a grey colour, and after a few days it rots, smells bad, and turns rancid. This is a result of oxidisation setting in, and that is a similar example of what happens to your cells when they’re affected by oxidisation caused by free-radicals. Antioxidants are referred to as such because they literally help prevent oxidisation.
