Tea is, without question, one of the most popular beverages in the entire world, in fact, some would argue that it is, in fact, the most popular beverage in the entire world. We aren’t here to debate just how popular the beverage is, but what we are here to do, is to focus on one type of tea in particular and look at whether or not you can drink too much green tea. Yes, as you’ve probably guessed, the type of tea we’ll be focussing on is green tea, and it is this very tea that is considered by many, to be one of the oldest forms of tea in the entire world. Discovered way back in ancient China during the Tang Dynasty, green tea is now exported to countries all over the world, and is renowned, not only for the many different varieties and delicious tastes, but also for the numerous health benefits provided by the drink in question. As green tea is so incredibly healthy, a large percentage of people actually consume large quantities of it on a daily basis, but can you drink too much green tea?
How much green tea should you consume?
If you’re simply looking to enjoy the delicious and unique taste associated with green tea, the amount you consume each day is usually not something you need to worry too much about, providing you don’t go wild of course. Most green tea lovers will settle for just one or two cups per day. If however, you’re looking to benefit from the multiple health benefits provided by green tea, some experts recommend consuming around 4 or 5 cups each day (this will of course always depend on your own situation).
Can you drink too much green tea?
Like all things in life, you can indeed have too much of a good thing, and so for that reason, yes, you certainly can drink too much green tea. Although green tea is still very healthy and beneficial for you, you can still drink too much and experience unpleasant and potentially harmful side effects, just like anything else.
What are the dangers of drinking too much green tea?
We’ll now take a look at a few of the more common dangers associated with drinking too much green tea. These include, but are not limited to:
Insomnia – Green tea naturally contains caffeine like all other forms of tea, and for that reason, if you find yourself drinking too much of it each day, the caffeine in your system can leave you feeling so alert and awake, that you struggle to sleep each night.
Addiction – Again, it is mainly the caffeine that is the issue here because people that drink too much green tea and struggle to sleep at night, will wake up feeling tired and lethargic the next day, and will drink more green tea to try and wake themselves up, and so the entire vicious circle repeats itself. Caffeine addiction is very common, so make sure you limit the amount of cups of tea you drink each day.
Dehydration – Another danger associated with drinking too much green tea is dehydration, due to the fact that it acts like a diuretic, meaning that it makes your body excrete more water than you consume. Dehydration can lead to kidney failure and all sorts of other issues, so again, make sure you limit the amount you drink each day.
