Despite being so healthy, there is evidence to suggest that drinking too much green tea can actually be detrimental to our health and well-being and so to help provide an answer to the question ‘can you drink too much green tea’ here’s a little more info on some of the risks associated with drinking too much green tea.
Can You Drink Too Much Green Tea? – Some Thoughts
How much green tea should we consume daily?
In order to benefit from the many, many health advantages associated with green tea, some experts recommend that we drink no more than 5 average sized cups of green tea each day, preferably spaced out every few hours.
What are the risks associated with drinking too much?
Some of the main risks associated with drinking too much green tea, include the following:
Constipation – Although green tea in healthy amounts has been proven to provide numerous benefits to the digestive system, including the relief of constipation, one of the main risks associated with drinking too much green tea is that it can actually, and rather ironically, cause constipation making it hard to make bowel movements, and making the entire process pretty painful.
Organ damage – In some cases, when people consume far too much green tea, they have been known to experience damage to their internal organs, including the kidneys and the liver in particular. This may be because it has diuretic effects, which means that you’re losing more water than you’re taking in, which results in the filtration organs having to work much harder than usual.
Insomnia and caffeine addiction – Green tea naturally contains caffeine, which acts as a potent stimulant that can become addictive. Some people experience withdrawal symptoms when they go without green tea for some time, which can lead to nausea, headache, irritability, and shaking. If you drink too much caffeine, it can also lead to insomnia as the caffeine can keep you awake at night.
Please note that green tea is in most cases really beneficial in healthy amounts. However, as with most things, over-doing it can have negative effects. This should, however, not keep you from drinking green tea in healthy amounts.
