There are a number of studies on green tea and kidney stones, that have linked green tea with being able to provide a number of benefits for individuals suffering with this very condition as well as preventing kidney stones from happening in the first place. Here’s a more direct look at green tea and kidney stones.
What are kidney stones and how do they develop?
Kidney stones is an extremely painful condition, with some people comparing the pain of passing a kidney stone to that of giving birth to a child. Around 5% of the entire world’s population will suffer from kidney stones at some point in their lives. Kidney stones develop thanks to large quantities of minerals, especially calcium, build up within the urinary tract to form crystals and eventually stones.
Green tea and kidney stones
So, now that we know a little more about kidney stones and how they develop, how does green tea figure into all of this? Well, a number of studies, have found that green tea actually looks as if it is able to help prevent the build-up of kidney stones in people of all ages, genders, shapes, and sizes. Recent studies have found that compounds contained in green tea could actually make it far harder for kidney stones to develop.
In China, a study found that green tea concentrates could help to break down the formation of crystals in the urinary tract, thus preventing them from clumping together and forming a kidney stone. Instead, the crystals break down and then are naturally excreted from our urine in a pain-free manner.
