When we think of popular beverages, especially hot beverages, tea is up there as one of the most popular, most widely consumed beverages in the entire world, and for very good reason too. Tea has been consumed for hundreds, thousands of years in fact, though back then it was consumed mainly for medicinal purposes, as opposed for enjoyment purposes. One especially popular strain of tea, which is renowned not only for its distinct flavour and the many different varieties it’s available in, is green tea. Made famous in China, or rather, having been discovered in China, green tea is now consumed all over the world and is actually a staple part of many different cultures and traditions, especially Japanese. One variety of green tea that is especially recognisable is gunpowder green tea. This tea gets its name because the leaves basically look like gunpowder pellets. Another similarity they have with gunpowder however, is that, although thankfully they aren’t explosive, they can actually burst and “pop” when they come into contact with hot water, which in turn releases not only a delicious flavour and aroma, but also all of the nutrients found naturally within the leaves. As soon as the hot water pops these little pellets, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, polyphenols, and numerous other healthy components seep their way out of the pellets and infuse into the water, giving you a delicious and healthy elixir of goodness.

Gunpowder green tea promotes longevity

Obviously if we had the choice, we’d all live as long and as healthily as we possibly could, which is another reason why gunpowder green tea is so popular. Studies claim that individuals that regularly consume this green tea will, on average, live longer than people who don’t regularly drink it. This is because the tea helps promote heart health, prevent cancer, boost immunity, and much more besides. To truly benefit, experts initially recommend a minimum of 5 cups per day, though experts at Harvard felt this was too much, and found that 3 – 4 cups per day would be just as beneficial. And still at this number, some would argue that this is too much or too little, so listen to your body, and of course as always consult any specialists you wish.

Healthy heart

As mentioned, whilst pretty much all green teas promote healthy hearts, gunpowder green tea is especially beneficial for maintaining a healthy heart. Gunpowder green tea has been found to lower unhealthy triglycerides (fats) and bad LDL cholesterol levels, that could damage the artery walls. Low levels of unhealthy fats and cholesterol will greatly reduce your risk of heart disease, which is another win for the gunpowder tea.


The main reason why experts feel that green tea in general is so healthy, is because it is rich in powerful antioxidants that destroy free radicals and carcinogens which can cause cancer. In particular, EGCG, a powerful antioxidant which is incredibly beneficial for fighting, and indeed for preventing cancer, is found in very high doses in gunpowder green tea, which again, is ideal for anybody looking to stay as fit and healthy as possible.
